The purpose of the guidebook is to help the reader develop ideas about equity with the goal of visualizing and articulating environmental disparities in Puget Sound. The guidebook offers a framework made up of a few simple steps for building an analysis of Vital Signs with an equity lens.


Nearshore Summit and Synthesis

This project prioritizes contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) for monitoring efforts and management responses. Hundreds of CECs such as pharmaceuticals, plasticizers, and pesticides have been found in Puget Sound.

Juvenile Salmonid Monitoring in Large Puget Sound Rivers

Juvenile salmonid monitoring is a key part of understanding freshwater productivity and marine survival of Chinook salmon. For this project, tribal and state smolt trap operators helped identify trends in Chinook salmon abundance and productivity across multiple rivers in Puget Sound.

This project includes a model for index of vulnerability to nitrates in groundwater and the first Vital Sign Indicator report for the vulnerability index Indicator.


Economic Vitality Vital Sign indicators

This project includes data compilation and analysis, annual update for three economic indicators in 2022, and Vital Sign key messages.


Outdoor Activities Vital Sign, Condition of swimming beaches indicator

This project included monitoring, data compilation, analyses, and reporting at Puget Sound marine beaches for fecal indicator bacteria, and communication to the public when a risk of disease was identified.


Shoreline Armor Vital Sign, indicator of new and removed armor

This project included HPA-based data compilation; Vital Sign Indicator reporting for 2019 and 2020; and a Vital Sign decadal summary report and final data product.


Subjective human wellbeing indicators

This project included a second survey and report in support of the subjective human wellbeing indicators. Reported on Cultural Wellbeing, Good Governance, Sense of Place, Sound Stewardship, Local Foods and Outdoor Activity Vital Signs.


Toxics in Fish Vital Sign, Contaminants in juvenile salmon indicator

View

This project assessed compatibility of historical data and assessed time trends. The project included an indicator update for contaminants in juvenile salmon and a draft manuscript and communication product.


2019 Recommendations for a Puget Sound Estuary Avian Monitoring Strategy

The PSEMP Marine Birds Work Group convened a wide cross-section of bird monitoring groups to develop a common framework for monitoring birds.
